Today in SA sports history: October 26

1996 — Gary Murray loses his marginal WBU welterweight title on a controversial disqualification to Italian Alessandro Duran in San Remo.

2001 — The Proteas beat India by six wickets in Durban in the final of the triangular ODI tournament also featuring Kenya. Asked to bat first, India were bowled out for 183, with Rahul Dravid top-scoring with 77. Justin Kemp took three wickets for SA, and Shaun Pollock and Nantie Hawward two each. Opener Gary Kirsten spearheaded the chase, striking 87 as SA reached the target with 47 balls to spare.

2002 — In one of the classic local ring wars, Cassius Baloyi fights back to stop former two-time world champion Mbulelo Botile in the 11th round at Carnival City.

2007 — The Proteas beat Pakistan by seven wickets in the fourth ODI in Multan to stay alive in the five-match series at 2-2. Younis Khan made 82 as the hosts were restricted to 230/9. SA captain Graeme Smith hit 81 and Shaun Pollock, coming in as a pinch-hitter, smashed 90 from 84 balls as the visitors achieved victory in the 38th over.

2010 — Colin Ingram makes an unbeaten 46 off 38 balls as the Proteas score 120/4 to beat Pakistan by six wickets in the first T20 in Abu Dhabi.

2017 — Quinton de Kock hits 59 off 44 balls and AB de Villiers an unbeaten 49 off 27 as the Proteas beat Bangladesh by 20 runs in the first T20 in Bloemfontein. SA posted 195/4.
