Meet the Maker

5 minutes with Nicki Ellis of stylish homeware brand, Love Milo

This local designer relishes the reward of turning ideas into tangible things

03 September 2017 - 00:00 By ROBERTA THATCHER

Why did you start Love Milo?
After working as a film colourist for six years and always working on other people's visions, I felt the need to go on my own. Falling pregnant with my first son was the catalyst for me to take the leap.
With a background in both cinematography and photography, I wanted to take images out of the two-dimensional space and into three-dimensional spaces so they could be enjoyed in our daily lives.
I left my job, rented a studio and started making things I loved. I must have been slightly crazy due to hormones!
What's the story behind the name?
My son's name is Milo and I really felt like a lot of the ideas were coming from him. I also felt it was a tribute to him, as he gave me the courage to live my own integrity.
The best thing about being a maker?
Being able to do something new every day, and the reward of turning ideas into tangible things.
Describe a typical day in the studio.
Every day is different, but usually I arrive, read my emails, work on designs, photograph products and edit. I then check in with the sewing and ceramics team in the studio to see how they are doing with new products and make adjustments where necessary.
What is your favourite material to work with, and why?
Fabric, because it offers so much possibility when it comes to applying images and colours. What are your thoughts on the local design industry at the moment?
I think it's very exciting. There are many awesome designers emerging, and I feel like South Africa is finally starting to define a look of its own that reflects the country and continent, instead of repeating what is being done internationally.
A famous person who you'd love to own one of your pieces?
Donald Trump, so he could Tweet about it!
When you're not working in the studio, where would we find you?
Either at home with my family or at yoga...
