There is something about Scotland that feels like the edge of the world. It's an impression that lingers in the names of places like Islay, Inverness and, perhaps most beautifully, Skye.
I picture fortress-like towns clinging to cliffs above wild Atlantic waters, Highlanders still ready to "quicken" at odd provocations ... and, in the mists and caverns of its innermost places, I suspect there still lurks a monster or two. This is the spell that Scotland weaves about the heads of the uninitiated.
Its lovely forests, rolling green fields, mountain mists and dark lochs all seem steeped in spirits. It has a captivating beauty that lends itself to wild imaginings...
